California Proposal Would Clean Up Heavy Equipment.
California air quality regulators are currently hearing testimony concerning a proposal requiring off-road diesel equipment to be retrofitted with emissions control technology or replace them with newer, cleaner engines. This sweeping ruling would force construction companies, airports and ski resorts to drastically reduce emissions of diesel particulate matter and NOx by as soon as 2010 to comply with new air quality regulations.“This by far is the largest diesel rule ever undertaken,” stated Natural Resources Defense Council scientist, Diane Bailey. “Nobody writes air pollution on the death certificate, but the fact is it is responsible for thousands of deaths in California.”
There are an estimated 180,000 diesel off-road vehicles in California that would fall under the proposed ruling.
