1. How long has CleanAIR Systems been in business?
CleanAIR was established in 1993.
2. Why should CleanAIR Systems handle my emissions control project?

For fifteen years, CleanAIR Systems has had a proven track record of solving emission challenges with quality, long-life products designed to meet today’s stringent air quality standards. Combining innovation, advanced product testing and an integrated manufacturing approach, the company works directly with the retro-fit market to supply custom proprietary systems for diesel and natural gas engines.

3. Is CleanAIR Systems an integrated manufacturer?
Yes. CleanAIR Systems has built its business as a custom, integrated manufacturer. Integration means CleanAIR has complete control over all parts of the system, from filter formulation and catalyzing to parts fabrication and product packaging.
4. Are CleanAIR Systems’ emissions solutions customized to meet my specific needs?
Yes. Due to CleanAIR’s integrated manufacturing approach, the company is capable of offering customized products for specific applications. Depending on a number of variables such as equipment age, size and regional emissions standards, CleanAIR’s technical staff will work with you to find the most cost-effective solution to your emissions problem. To request a job quote, visit the Request for Pricing page on this website and tell us the specific information that applies to your application.
5. Are CleanAIR custom-designed products more expensive compared to off-the-shelf, standardized products?
CleanAIR’s custom products are comparable in price to other standard products. Over the life of the product, CleanAIR’s approach to custom-design and manufacturing can actually save money because:
  • the product is specially designed to fit the application; therefore it easily fits within space requirements and inlet/outlet locations, requiring no additional installation or labor costs.
  • custom-designed products are specifically sized for each engine to avoid backpressure problems. Undersized products can result in engine or filter damage.
  • CleanAIR’s sturdy, 304L stainless steel construction resists corrosion, providing a longer product life over control products manufactured from lesser grades of steel that may need to be replaced more frequently.
  • CleanAIR designs complete systems, ready-to-install. There are no additional parts that need to be purchased over and above the system.
6. Does CleanAIR Systems provide technical product support?
Yes. CleanAIR offers free technical support for their products.
7. Is CleanAIR Systems a U.S. company?
Yes. There are a limited number of emissions control manufacturers in the United States offering fully integrated, customized systems. Because CleanAIR uses all U.S.-based suppliers as well as providing their own integrated manufacturing, product costs are not inflated by shipping charges incurred from the import of filters or other parts from outside of the U.S. Also, if all parts are manufactured by the same company, there is only one warranty and one tech contact, rather than several. CleanAIR Systems is a U.S.-owned, privately held company that manufactures all parts used within their emissions control systems.
8. Does CleanAIR use any toxic materials in their products?
No. CleanAIR guaranties that no toxic materials are used in the manufacturing process or final product. Material safety data sheets (MSDS) are supplied with every product to insure customer safety. Some companies may use toxic materials such as Vanadium within their catalyst, requiring special handling procedures. Make sure you are aware of the materials used in the manufacturing of a catalyst prior to purchase.
9. What emissions solutions products does CleanAIR Systems offer?

10. Does CleanAIR have a CARB verified product?
Yes, the PERMIT™ Filter is CARB verified, Level 3 for prime power and emergency generators. The only verified filter to incorporate long-lasting, 304 stainless steel packaging, the PERMIT™ Filter was the first diesel particulate filter to be verified by California’s Air Resources Board in 2003. The PERMIT™ is also considered to meet EPA verification through a reciprocal agreement whereby EPA will honor CARB verification.
11. What is a Filter/Silencer or DOC/Silencer?
Using an innovative approach to emissions control technology, CleanAIR has developed a product that combines diesel particulate filters or diesel oxidation converters within a double-walled, fully insulated silencer shell. This product offers emissions reduction, as well as sound attenuation. See Hybrid technology.
12. Is CleanAIR’s PERMIT™ Filter/Silencer system verified by CARB or EPA?
The PERMIT™ Filter/Silencer system is CARB verified, Level 3 for prime power and emergency generators. It has passed rigorous testing requirements to meet strict California air quality regulations. If a technology is CARB verified it is also considered EPA verified through a reciprocal agreement between EPA and CARB.
13. Is CleanAIR’s PERMIT™ Filter/Silencer system all-inclusive?
CleanAIR’s emissions control system for stationary engines is a complete system, ready for installation. System components include: PERMIT™ Filters, stainless-steel silencer packaging, and CleanAIR’s HiBACK™ USB backpressure monitor.
14. Does the PERMIT™ Filter/Silencer System adhere to engine manufacturers’ backpressure limits?
The CleanAIR technical sales staff will make sure your product is properly sized to avoid backpressure issues. A system requires the correct number of filters as well as the right size filter in order to function within the specified engine backpressure. A correctly sized Filter/Silencer will guarantee against a drop in emissions control efficiency and damage to the system.
15. How do I know if backpressure is a problem?
The HiBACK USB™ is a microprocessor-based data logger and alarm system designed by CleanAIR Systems to record and monitor backpressure and temperature. The proprietary design allows the user to be warned of a potential backpressure problem. The HiBACK USB™ can also track the duty cycle of the engine and allow analysis of operation time, exhaust temperature and backpressure profiles. Collected data can be downloaded to a computer for detailed analysis. For more information, see Product Specifications for the PERMIT™ Filter/Silencer System.
16. What material is used in the construction of the PERMIT™ Filter/Silencer System?
CleanAIR uses corrosion resistant, long-lasting 304L stainless steel to package the outer silencer shell and inner filter housing. Considered one of the most durable fabrication materials, 304L stainless steel is used to manufacture all CleanAIR emissions control products.
17. Does the PERMIT™ Filter/Silencer emissions control system also meet sound attenuation requirements?
Yes, systems are available in three levels:
  • Industrial Grade: 22 – 29 dBA
  • Critical Grade: 27 – 35 dBA
  • Super Critical Grade: 30 – 38 dBA

Critical and Super Critical Grade silencer systems are double-walled and fully insulated to meet sound attenuation requirements.

18. Can CleanAIR’s Filter/Silencer systems fit within the available space of my application?
Yes. When space is a problem, the solution requires a system to be customized to meet a buyer’s space limitations. Using custom engineering and design, every CleanAIR system is fabricated to meet the customer’s application-specific requirements.
19. Will the PERMIT™ Filter/Silencer require installation and/or labor costs?
Emissions control systems can be complicated depending on the application and control technology required. CleanAIR custom designs product packaging to user specifications such as space and inlet/outlet locations, offering easier installation. The easier the system is to install, the less it will cost the buyer in labor charges.
20. What happens if my filters become plugged?
CleanAIR’s PERMIT™ Filter not only captures over 85% of diesel PM but also collects noncombustible ash produced due to the burning of engine oil. As with most filters, the ash must periodically be removed to maximize filter life. CleanAIR offers two solutions for filter cleaning:
  • Inspect and Clean: CleanAIR offers an easy, inexpensive cleaning service for customers. The filter is return to CleanAIR for a thorough cleaning and follow-up inspection at our facility.
  • The AeroCLEAN: A safe, fast and effective cleaning system developed by CleanAIR to dislodge collected material using compressed air. Does not require electricity.

Contact CleanAIR Systems directly for information on “Inspect and Clean” and the AeroCLEAN System.

21. What is Hybrid technology?
CleanAIR has recently developed a custom hybrid product that combines selective catalytic reduction, along with filters or catalysts packaged inside a silencer shell. A hybrid can offer reductions of NOx, particulate, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, as well as sound attenuation.
22. Is there a system warranty on performance and workmanship?
Yes. All verified and unverified CleanAIR systems include a product warranty.
23. Will my system be completed and delivered within the specified time requirement?
Because CleanAIR Systems is an integrated manufacturer, we have better control over lead times. Many times we can provide custom products in the same or less time than off-the-shelf products produced by other manufacturers.
